Creating Joyful Havens: Our Playroom Renovation for Anova This year, Roo & You™ had the honor of completing a project that means the world to me—a complete makeover of the childcare rooms at Anova’s shelters in London, Ontario. Anova provides shelter, support, counseling, and resources for women, children, and vulnerable folks seeking a new start. After attending Anova’s 2023 Gala last October with our team, I was touched by the stories of strength and survival shared that night. It reminded me of the importance of the childcare rooms—those safe spaces where kids can just be kids, even if only for a short while—and how they were in desperate need of some love. That’s when Matt and I decided Roo & You™ would step in to give these rooms the refresh they needed. The makeover process was nothing short of magical. Kiana and I dove into planning with brightness, joy, and function in mind. We wanted these rooms to feel like safe havens, filled with warmth and creativity. We met with the wonderful staff at Anova to see the spaces and understand how the families and staff use the playrooms. We chose an airy paint color that could still hide little handprints and selected Joey® pieces in Anova’s colors to create a cozy and imaginative space. Kiana designed fun signs to match the room’s color scheme, and my kids picked out some of their favorite books to add a personal touch. We kept the toys simple and minimal, focusing on items that spark imagination rather than lots of breakable and little pieces. The Joey® pieces were perfect—cozy and versatile, so the kids can lounge, build, and just let their imaginations run wild.     For the first location, we kept it simple with neutral walls since it was already bright with windows all around. The second location had a mural, but we decided to replace it with a cheerful accent wall that tied in with the rest of the room. We wanted the rooms to be versatile, so they’re perfect for play and imagination but also great for relaxing or watching TV. Adding smart TVs in each room was a nice touch for both the little ones and the teens. We painted, updated the flooring, added some decorations, replaced well-loved toys and books, and filled the rooms with our Joey® pieces. Initially, we planned to replace the flooring at just one location, thinking the other one was in better shape. The first location’s makeover went smoothly—paint, flooring, furniture, decor, reveal! But once we saw how amazing the first room looked with the new floors, we knew the second location needed the same treatment to really get that fresh new look. With only a day left before the room had to be ready for March break, I was on the phone scrambling to find someone who could install the floors the next day. Thankfully, it all came together—Kiana painted the accent wall while the new flooring was being installed, and it turned out beautifully. The best part was seeing the kids’ reactions at the second location. Watching their faces light up as they walked into their new playroom was everything—it took everything in me not to cry. My heart was so full of pride and joy. Seeing the kids, staff, and families who rely on these shelters enjoy these new spaces was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. These refreshed playrooms aren’t just rooms—they’re vibrant, cozy spaces where kids can play, relax, and just be themselves. They feel like a big, warm hug—a safe haven filled with comfort and joy. A special shout-out goes to Kiana for all her incredible hard work and dedication throughout this project. She put in so many hours, including overtime, to bring our vision to life, and I couldn’t have done this without her. From planning every little detail to painting those beautiful accent walls, Kiana truly poured her heart into these spaces. Her talent and commitment made all the difference, and I’m so grateful to have had her by my side in making these playrooms magical for the kids and families at Anova. This project meant the world to me for many reasons. I have personal connections to Anova that go beyond my time working there—lifelong friendships with amazing people (two of their children were even our ring bearer and flower girl at our wedding!). Having survived an abusive relationship during my first year of college, this cause holds a special place in my heart. Giving back in this way felt like coming full circle, and I’m incredibly grateful we could make a difference for families who need so much love and care. This was truly one of the most meaningful experiences of my life, and I’m so proud of Roo & You™ for making it happen. Non-Foam Certifications Parent Tested, Parent Approved (PTPA): 2020 - 2024 To earn the PTPA Trust Mark, Roo & You™ was tested by fifteen (15) randomly selected, anonymous parents who then provide feedback after six (6) weeks.
